Infrastructure as a service provides virtual machines, storage and networking; the customer manages the operating system and everything above it. Finished applications over the web describe SaaS, a managed runtime for code describes PaaS, and event-driven code without servers describes serverless computing such as Azure Functions.
What is an Azure region pair?
A region pair is two Azure regions in the same geography linked so that some services replicate data between them and planned platform updates roll out to one region at a time, which supports disaster recovery. Two zones inside one region are availability zones. Edge locations serve CDN content, and sovereign regions are separate instances of Azure for compliance needs.
Which tool helps you monitor and control Azure spending?
Microsoft Cost Management analyzes actual spending, sets budgets and alerts, and shows where money goes, so you can monitor and control Azure costs. Azure Monitor tracks resource performance and logs rather than spending, Service Health reports Azure incidents, and the TCO Calculator estimates savings before a migration.
What is the benefit of scalability for a seasonal business?
A seasonal business needs extra capacity only during busy periods; cloud scalability lets it add resources for the peak and remove them afterward, so it pays only for what it uses. Capacity sized for the average month fails at peak, buying for the yearly peak leaves hardware idle most of the year, and a three-year reservation suits steady workloads rather than short seasonal spikes.
What does Azure Container Instances provide?
Azure Container Instances runs containers on demand without you provisioning or managing VMs, which suits simple or short-lived workloads. Orchestration on a managed cluster is AKS, Docker on your own VM is IaaS, and a registry for images is Azure Container Registry.
What does a resource lock prevent?
A resource lock (CanNotDelete or ReadOnly) protects a subscription, resource group or resource from accidental deletion or modification, even by users who have permission. Restricting who can read data is Azure RBAC, blocking deployments to certain regions is Azure Policy, and budgets alert on spending but do not block it.
What is SaaS?
Software as a service delivers complete applications, such as Microsoft 365, that users consume over the internet while the provider manages everything underneath. VMs you patch are IaaS, a managed platform for your code is PaaS, and leased hardware in a provider facility is colocation, not a cloud service model.
What is a subscription in Azure?
An Azure subscription is a logical unit that provides billing and access control boundaries for the resources created in it. A grouping of related resources is a resource group, a container of subscriptions is a management group, and the directory holding identities is the Microsoft Entra tenant.
What does a policy initiative group?
A policy initiative (policy set definition) groups related policy definitions so they can be assigned and tracked as one unit toward a goal, such as a compliance standard. Several subscriptions under one parent is a management group, assigning roles is Azure RBAC, and resources sharing a lifecycle belong in a resource group.
Who manages the operating system in a PaaS model?
In platform as a service, the cloud provider manages the operating system, runtime and underlying infrastructure, while the customer manages its applications and data. The customer manages the OS only in IaaS. The OS is not a jointly managed layer in PaaS, and end users consume the application without managing any platform layer.
